  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix or homemade chocolate cake mix (in addition, the ingredients needed for the mix)
  • 1 cup (226g) softened butter
  • 4 cups (480g) powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 30+ yellow M&M candies
  • Red, green, and black food coloring


  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two cupcake pans with 18 cupcake liners. Follow the instructions on the homemade chocolate cake mix to prepare the batter.
  2. Fill each cupcake liner about two-thirds full with the chocolate cake batter.
  3. Bake the cupcakes for 20 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely.
  4. In a large bowl, using a hand mixer or a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the softened butter until fluffy.
  5. Gradually add powdered sugar to the butter, mixing well after each addition.
  6. Add vanilla extract, heavy cream, and a pinch of kosher salt to the butter-sugar mixture. Beat until smooth and thoroughly combined.
  7. Divide the frosting into four separate bowls. Dye one-third of the frosting green, another one-third red, and leave the remaining two-thirds divided equally between two bowls.
  8. Place each colored frosting in separate piping bags.
  9. Using the red frosting, create small dots in the center of the yellow M&M candies.
  10. Start frosting the cupcakes by piping a thick layer of green frosting on top of each cupcake.
  11. Using the red frosting, pipe a hat shape on top of the green frosting. Add a white line where the red and green frosting meet to form the bottom of the hat.
  12. Finish the hat by adding a dollop of white frosting on top. Place two eyes underneath the hat and use the black frosting to pipe eyebrows.
  13. Repeat the process for all cupcakes.
